About The Art

This website is meant to display the ceramic art work that I made in my ceramics class at north seattle college. There is an Installations section where you can see multiple art pieces meant to be displayed together, aswell as individual pieces which are all displayed individually under the Art section .

The process

There are two main processes that I used to create these art pieces. The first is hand building in which I manually shaped and assembled the clay using my hands and basic tools to build the art pieces. This method can either be from using slabs which are then cut into the shapes that make up the piece and assembled, or from using coils of clay which are then layered one by one to make the outline of the piece and then smoothed down. This method is ideal for creating more complex and asymetrical shapes, usually figures or more artistic pieces. The vase shown on the right uses both of these methods. The body of the pot was made by layering coils like a 3d printer would. then the fins where cut out from flat slabs of clay and attached to the vase. The second Method of making pieces that I used in this class was wheel throwing. In which a large chunk of clay is placed on a rotating wheel and then you shape the clay as it spins like you would in a lathe to achieve a more uniform and precise look. This method is usually preffered for smoother and simpler shapes that are simetrical, usually plates, bowls or more "utility" oriented pieces.

About me

I am currently attending north seattle college taking pre reqs for electrical engineering, while this field is quite different from ceramic arts, I still decided to take this class because I like making art and other kinds of projects in my free time. I think creativity is a key aspect of being an engineer and ceramic art allows you to bring your ideas to life in the same way.
